Mike began his gooning career in Hamilton in the OHL in 1984/5 where he managed to amass 225 penalty minutes in 57 games. His highest penalty total in one season is 317 minutes in 48 games, which he managed with Cape-Breton Oilers in 1987/8 in the AHL. Amazingly he got to play 5 games in the NHL with Edmonton Oilers in 1988/9 and 1989/90.... where there player strikes that year ? In these games he managed an assist (I think the puck bounced off his stick to a forward) and 15 penalty minutes including a 5 minute major. His career stats amount to 651 games playes, 160 goals (.25 per game) 255 assists (.4 per game) and an enormous 2640 minutes (4 minutes a game). His ‘crowning glory ‘ (punn intended) came in the 1998/9 season with Hannover Scorpions in the DEL when he took an opponent out ‘McSorley style’ in the pre game warm up. One moment in the game he is to be applauded for is his three punch destrcution of ex NHL ‘hardman’ Dennis ‘Glassjaw’ Vial. |
